Respecting industrial heritage

Dow Street

This transformation of a 1960s warehouse into contemporary residential apartments included a row of steel ‘portals’ that marks the line of the original façade and supports climbing, deciduous vines. Pre-stressed concrete beams that supported the existing concrete floor were retained to create a strong visual rhythm within the apartments. The stair wells were designed using a translucent cladding so that at night they glow to provide a marker for visitors to the project and reduce the need for obtrusive street lighting.
