Urban infill on a 'Tokyo' site

Mirka Lane

On a site measuring just 14 by 9 metres, Mirka reclaims the airspace above an existing five-space car park behind an auto repair workshop in vibrant St Kilda. Although the site is located down a narrow laneway and opposite a 19-metre high wall, rather than create an introspective building with minimal openings the design strategy was to create four light-filled work/life environments.

Constructed in block work and off-form concrete, the building’s robust simplicity is consistent with its industrial location, while the infill-glazed facades draw as much natural light as possible inside each unit.
